GOD BLESS ED KOCH - THE MAYOR

So many replies and personal stories have come to Norma's Ark Blog in only one day that I am swamped.
:-)  Once I can collate a few of the nicest ones, they will go into comments.  Thank you all for your rapid replies.  Sincerely... Dr. RubyNorma Yanez.

This is the way I choose to remember
NYC Mayor Ed Koch.  He was my amazing boss.   I enjoyed his unusual and forceful ways, and yes, Ed Koch was also my splendid role model.  Let me share a wonderful story with you...

One day I decided to bring my very young daughter to work with me at City Hall. We went in through the back entrance just as The Mayor was exiting with a group of people.  We literally collided.  He said he was sorry and patted my little girl on the head.  Next thing I knew her  feet went out  from under her, and she hit the floor from the encounter. To her it was a very big deal to have The Mayor of NYC touch her head fondly.
I swiftly lifted her up, dusted her off, and got out of the way before anyone thought to photograph and perhaps change the real story.    Having seen far too many fairy tales written by reporters on the City Hall beat,  it was prudent to just disappear. So we skeeeee-dah-dled downstairs for me to introduce her to some wonderful police I had befriended.

A few years ago I e-mailed The Mayor.  He still remembered me.  What a great mind.  Having him live to 88, was a gift to the world from GOD!
Rest In Peace, Dear and Unusual Man.  You have earned it.  And thanks for that once upon a time recommendation of a doctor who once treated your own mother so very many years ago.  :-)
I wish you well in your upcoming journey.
Love ~ RubyNorma Yanez
p.s.  When next we meet, I bet you will still remember me. Tonight we will light Friday Shabbos Candles and pray for your beloved soul. amen

Here are some of the many comments sent in by our readers.

We never met him but we voted for him! He was  "a special soul!"

Did you know that while he was mayor of NYC he did not take any salary?

What a lovely thing to remember.

Beautiful testimony.  Brought tears.

My whole family loved him we are native New Yorkers.

That is so neat. J

Nice one.  I met him once and he stopped to chat.

Ruby, I had no idea you worked for him.

I too join you! When my son was in kindergarten, his class went to City Hall and I went along. As many classes were there in the lobby, in walked Mr. Koch. He stopped, came up to my boy, and stroked his face many times and said he knew this was someone very special. I must have been kvelling because he came up to me and said that I have done something very special to have such a wonderful child. I kvelled and kvelled. He then just waved and disappeared! Loved that man, a great friend of Israel!! May he rest in peace knowing he was loved and appreciated by many. Love you!

Beautiful blog Dr. Ruby.

That was a pretty nice story.

I think he must have been a very important person.

I never met him but I voted for him! He was a "one of a kind!"

What a gift he had...to touch the hearts (and not the pocketbooks) of so many people!!  He was truly a blessing sent from Heaven!

Mayor Ed Koch did not take a salary!!!

What a fabulous thing to remember and share with us.

Comments:
Although my family never met Ed Koch, we also loved how he governed NYC. He is a true one of a kind. No one can fill his big shoes.
